Copyright and third-party material

The site itself is subject to German copyright law. The data it uses belongs to other people and keeps its own terms: pronunciations come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (BSD-style licence), word frequencies from hermitdave/FrequencyWords (MIT) built on OpenSubtitles, the spell-check word list from Hunspell en, and the list of rude words from hypernewbie/vbw. The icons are Lucide (ISC licence).

Overview

wordlab is a static site with no back end. The dictionaries are downloaded to your browser once and every search runs on your own device — what you type is never sent anywhere. There are no cookies, no tracking, no analytics, no accounts and no contact forms.

Hosting

This site is hosted by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Ave #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA. When you open the site, the hosting provider may process technically necessary access data in order to deliver it and to keep it secure, stable and fast: IP address, date and time of access, the requested file, the amount of data transferred, referrer URL, browser type, operating system and HTTP status code. This data may be stored in server log files.

The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; the legitimate interest is the secure and reliable provision of this site. Since Vercel Inc. is based in the United States, data may be transferred to a third country. Where applicable, such transfers rest on appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

Domain and DNS

The domain is registered through Porkbun LLC; DNS is operated by Cloudflare, Inc. DNS resolution is technically required for your browser to reach this site under its domain name.

Local storage

The site stores one thing in your browser's local storage: whether you chose the light or the dark theme. It stays on your device, is not a cookie, is not transmitted, and you can delete it at any time by clearing site data.

Reading results aloud

The “hear it” buttons use your browser's built-in speech synthesis (the Web Speech API). Which voice does the speaking is the browser's decision: most voices run locally on your device, but some browsers — Chrome's Google voices, for example — synthesise speech on the vendor's servers. In that case the phrase you asked to hear is sent to the browser vendor by the browser itself, under that vendor's own privacy policy. Nothing is spoken unless you press a play button.
